Breastfed Baby Gas
Is your newborn gassy from time to time?
Breastfed baby gas is normal as long as it doesn’t leave your baby screaming in pain.
Many babies are gassy, some more than others, especially in the first month due to immature digestive systems. Some babies are very bothered when they have gas and others couldn’t care less.
If your baby is steadily gaining weight and isn’t too stressed by gas, you don’t have to worry about it.
Usually babies either have less gas or they learn how to handle it better as they get older. Time is the best cure here.
What causes breastfed babies to have gas?
Everyone has gas so it’s not problematic in itself. But besides for being so young (with an immature digestive system), gas may also be caused by gulping air during feedings (possibly due to a poor latch or strong milk ejection reflex of mom’s), thrush, or by taking in too much milk too fast.
Either way, breastfed baby gas can be eased through baby massage, gripe water, or by burping in between feedings. When massaging, make sure to rub the stomach in a clockwise motion and bicycle the legs.
It will become better–or at least manageable–in the upcoming months ahead.
