Breastfeeding Basics

Looking for some breastfeeding basics that will help you become successful with breastfeeding your baby? Here are some key points to keep in mind:

· Nurse as soon as you can when your baby is born. Your baby will be more alert as soon as he or she is born and this is an ideal time to get that first nursing in.

· Try not to be nervous about breastfeeding, it’s natural. You and your baby have a lot to learn when it comes to breastfeeding but with practice, you will both get it right.

· Try out different positions (such as cradle hold, football hold) until you find the one that gives you the best latch and more comfort.

· If you are in pain, your baby probably doesn’t have a good latch; switch positions or ask a lactation consultant or La Leche League leader for help. Remember to keep baby tummy to tummy! Baby should not have to twist his head to nurse.

· Watch and listen to your baby when breastfeeding, after a few moments at the breast you should see and hear him or her taking gulps.

· Feed on demand, your baby need nourishment and your body is trying to figure out how much milk to make.
