Breastfeeding Bottles
When moms look for bottles for their breastfeeding babies, they’re often most concerned about finding a nipple that imitates what their baby felt when on the breast.
This is important because you don’t want your baby to have nipple confusion and refuse the breast because he or she has developed a preference to the bottle nipple, which is usually much easier to get milk out of than the breast. Of course, some babies will have this difficulty no matter what kind of bottle/nipple combo you use. For this reason, you should try to avoid artificial nipples for a very young infant just learning to nurse. Of course, some babies can switch back and forth easily with no trouble.
When looking for breastfeeding bottles, check with manufacturers that make high quality breastfeeding products such as Medela and Avent. They both have great pumps and understand the importance of providing a nipple that will help breastfeeding babies get the nourishment they need while away from mom.
Breastfeeding bottles usually have a slow flow, which means babies still have to work just as they do at the breast to get milk out. The nipple is also most like the shape and feel of the mother’s nipple.
My recommendation is the Avent breastfeeding bottle system. The Avent manual breast pump system allows you to store expressed milk in the same bottle as you use to feed your baby. It comes with a nice cap for when you are storing and then all you have to do is either switch the cap or take the top insert out and put in the nipple.
Be sure to alert yourself to the dangers of BPA in baby bottles. Choose BPA free baby bottles whenever possible to avoid exposing your baby to this chemical. Some Avent products are BPA free, or you could choose bottles made by companies like Think Baby, Born Free, Dr. Brown’s, and Green to Grow.
