Breastfeeding challenges

Breastfeeding should be simple: All you do is put baby to the breast and you’re ready to go, right? Not quite. Nursing can present some challenges. The good news is that most breastfeeding challenges can be overcome with perseverance and the help of a certified lactation consultant or La Leche League leader.

One of the most common problems with breastfeeding is having sore nipples. Breastfeeding should not be painful, although some initial soreness is common since your body is getting accustomed to a new activity.

The best way to prevent and heal sore nipples is to help your baby maintain a correct latch. Your baby’s mouth should be wide open and around the areola—not just the nipple. Try changing positions with each nursing session and rub a few drops of milk over your nipples to promote healing. Nipple cream such as Lansinoh may also help.

Breastfeeding mothers need support. Make sure you have the help of a lactation consultant and the encouragement of friends and other nursing mothers. As always, you can contact La Leche League for advice on handling breastfeeding challenges.
