Choosing Pumps for Breastfeeding

There are a large number of breast pumps available to use while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding pumps range from manual to electric to hospital grade. Deciding which pump you need depends on your lifestyle and needs.

-A manual pump may be enough if you plan to stay at home with your infant and only need to pump every now and then. This is sufficient if you just need to make a bottle if you’re going out for a few hours once or twice a week. It is the least expensive option. The Avent manual breast pump gets great reviews from breastfeeding moms for its ease of use, low price and comfort.

-An electric pump comes in several varieties. Some pump only one breast at a time but others pump both simultaneously. If you are returning to work, an electric pump that empties both sides at once is a worthwhile investment. These pumps usually cost a few hundred dollars. Medela and Ameda are two well respect brands of electric pumps.

-A hospital grade pump is available for rent from most hospitals’ lactation departments. These require a monthly rental payment and can be returned when you are finished with them. You are required to purchase your own accessory kit. This option is good if you only plan to nurse for a few months and will not have the opportunity to recoup the cost of private electric pump.
