Nursing a Two Year Old

Nursing a two year-old is a beautiful thing. Contrary to what some people may think, nursing a toddler isn’t “icky” or weird. The benefits of breastfeeding aren’t limited to infants. Breast milk continues to provide vital nutrients like protein, fat and vitamins all the way into the second and third year (and beyond). Some of the immune factors in breast milk may even increase in concentration during a baby’s second year. Plus, there is evidence that breastfed toddlers gain IQ points.

Outside of the US it’s completely normal to nurse a toddler. The worldwide average age of weaning is between two to four years old. So the next time someone shoots you a dirty look or makes a rude comment about nursing a two year-old, tell them the facts are on your side. The World Health Organization even recommends nursing until your baby is at least two years old.

So there. Nurse away and ignore those naysayers.
